They is the new he.

The Associated Press recently updated its AP Stylebook to accept the use of they, them and their as singular pronouns. That’s a significant change for two reasons. First, it’s the usage suggested by the style resource of record for journalists all over the world. And second, it’s indicative of the growing acceptance of more inclusive, gender-neutral language many people prefer. So the next time you’re tempted to write “he or she” in your professional communications, remember that the AP says “they” is an acceptable and even preferred alternative. No matter how it might confound your high school English teacher.
